Private label mushroom skincare and personal care: reishi body wash, tremella hand cream, reishi shampoo, body lotion and soap on a bathroom shelf
From the supplement shelf to the bathroom shelf.
Private label mushroom skincare lets a supplement brand put reishi, tremella and other functional mushrooms into body lotion, shampoo, hand cream, soap and toothpaste, sold under its own name. The simplest way to do it is with a manufacturer that already extracts the mushrooms and also develops personal care formulas, so one partner can support both your supplement line and your personal care line.
This guide covers which mushroom ingredients and products work in personal care, what to put on your spec sheet, and the cosmetic rules to check before you sell in North America or Europe.
Why Mushroom Brands Are Moving Into Personal Care
Medicinal mushrooms are no longer sold only as capsules and powders. On cross-border marketplaces, reishi and tremella extracts now show up in body wash, body lotion, shampoo, hand cream, soap and toothpaste, and mushroom personal care is growing into a category of its own.
For a brand that already sells mushroom supplements, personal care is a natural next step:
- Your shoppers already know the ingredient.Someone who takes a reishi capsule every morning will recognize reishi on a body wash label.
- One ingredient story runs across two shelves.A reishi supplement and a reishi body care range tell the same brand story in two parts of the home.
- You build a fuller product line.Oral supplements plus personal care give your brand more ways to meet the same customer.
Why Two Separate Factories Slow You Down
Many brands start with oral supplements and add personal care later. The usual route is to buy mushroom extract from one supplier and hire a separate personal care factory to turn it into finished products.
That split creates two problems:
- Higher communication costs.Every formula question, sample round and packaging change passes between two teams that do not work together.
- Quality standards that don’t match. The extract supplier and the personal care factory each run their own quality control, which makes it hard to hold both product lines to one standard.
When the source manufacturer can extract the mushrooms and develop the personal care formulas, both lines can be planned in one place, from the same raw materials.
Which Mushroom Ingredients Are Used in Skincare and Personal Care?
The mushroom ingredients most used in personal care are reishi extract and tremella extract. Lion’s mane, cordyceps, chaga and reishi spore oil can also be added. Brands often choose reishi for its long history in East Asia, and tremella as a moisturizing-type ingredient in body lotion and hand cream.
Reishi (ling zhi)
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum, known in Chinese as ling zhi) has a long tradition of use in East Asia, which makes it the most recognizable mushroom name on a personal care label. At Herbal Treasure, we grow our own reishi in organic greenhouses and on a log-grown forest base in Jiangle County, Sanming, in Fujian Province. That means the reishi in your body wash can come from the same base as the reishi in your capsules.
Tremella (yin er)
Tremella (Tremella fuciformis, known in Chinese as yin er and in English as snow fungus) is a pale, ruffled mushroom with a jelly-like texture. In personal care, tremella extract is used as a moisturizing-type ingredient in body lotions and hand creams.
Lion’s mane, cordyceps, chaga and reishi spore oil
These are also available for personal care formulas. They are a good fit when you want a body care or hair care product to mirror a supplement already in your range, for example a lion’s mane supplement brand that adds a lion’s mane body wash.

Mushroom Personal Care Products You Can Private Label
Our current mushroom personal care range covers eight products in three groups:
| Category | Products | What to decide |
| Body care | Body wash, body lotion, hand cream, soap | Mushroom ingredient, scent, texture, bottle or tube size |
| Hair care | Shampoo, conditioner | Mushroom ingredient, hair type you are targeting, scent |
| Oral care | Toothpaste, mouthwash | Flavor, fluoride-free positioning, claims for your market |
Face cream, serum, lip balm and face mask are in development, so ask us about timing if facial care is part of your plan.
Body care: the easiest place to start
Body wash, body lotion, hand cream and soap are everyday products, and they leave room on the label for a mushroom story. Tremella is mainly used in body lotion and hand cream; reishi works across the whole body care group.
Hair care: shampoo and conditioner
A matching shampoo and conditioner make a simple two-product launch. Keep the claims cosmetic, such as cleansing hair or leaving it soft. In the United States, a shampoo that claims to control dandruff is regulated as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug, not a cosmetic.
Oral care: toothpaste and mouthwash
Our mushroom toothpaste is developed as a fluoride-free cosmetic toothpaste. That matters because in the United States, a fluoride toothpaste or any toothpaste that claims to fight cavities is an OTC drug with its own rules. Keep oral care labels to flavor, ingredients and cosmetic wording such as “cleans teeth” or “freshens breath.”
OEM or ODM: Two Ways to Start
You can work with us in two ways:
- OEM:you bring your own formula, and we develop and supply the product under your brand.
- ODM:you start from one of our ready-made personal care formulas and customize the mushroom ingredient, scent and packaging.
Minimum order quantities depend on the product, the formula and the packaging. Ready-made formulas can be ordered in lower quantities, which suits brands that want to test one or two products before building a full range. Our packaging design service can also help you design labels and boxes that match your supplement line. For a closer look at the two models, see our guide to OEM vs ODM.
What to Put on a Mushroom Personal Care Spec Sheet
A clear spec sheet keeps your formula, your label and your batch documents in line. For mushroom personal care, include:
- Product and size:the product type and its volume or weight, given in both metric and US units (ml and fl oz, or g and oz) if you sell in North America and Europe.
- Mushroom ingredient:the species, the part used (fruiting body or spores), and whether it is a powder, an extract or spore oil.
- Amount added:how much mushroom ingredient goes into the formula.
- Target markets:they decide your labeling, notifications and allowed claims.
- Planned claims:list every claim you want on the pack so it can be checked against your market’s rules before the formula is final.
- Documents:a certificate of analysis (COA) for the mushroom raw material and a full ingredient list for your label.
- Packaging:bottle, tube, jar or soap wrap, plus your brand artwork.

Cosmetic Rules to Check Before You Sell
Mushroom personal care is regulated as a cosmetic, not as a dietary supplement. Your supplement paperwork does not carry over, so plan these steps with your regulatory adviser:
- United States:under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA), cosmetic facilities register with the FDA and the responsible person lists each product, keeps safety substantiation on file and reports serious adverse events. A claim to treat or prevent a condition turns a cosmetic into a drug.
- European Union:Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 requires a Responsible Person based in the EU, a Product Information File with a Cosmetic Product Safety Report, and notification in the Cosmetic Products Notification Portal (CPNP) before sale. Claims must meet the EU’s common criteria for cosmetic claims.
- United Kingdom:the UK has its own notification system, the Submit Cosmetic Product Notifications (SCPN) service.
- Canada:brands file a Cosmetic Notification Form with Health Canada within 10 days of first selling a product.
Wherever you sell, keep claims cosmetic: cleanses, moisturizes, leaves hair feeling soft. Avoid words like heals, repairs or anti-inflammatory. Our mushroom supplement compliance guide covers the supplement side of the same markets.
How Herbal Treasure Supports Mushroom Personal Care Brands
Herbal Treasure has worked with edible and medicinal mushrooms in Fujian, China, since 2003. For brands adding personal care, that means:
- Raw materials:reishi from our own organic greenhouses and log-grown forest base, and other materials from compliant cultivation and collection. See how our log-grown reishi is grown.
- Extraction and testing:an NSF cGMP-certified extraction workshop and an in-house laboratory that tests active content, heavy metals, microbiology and species identity on every batch.
- Personal care formula development:body wash, body lotion, hand cream, soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and mouthwash, with face cream, serum, lip balm and face mask in development.
- Supplements under the same roof:capsules, tablets, powders, gummies, tinctures and mushroom coffee, so both product lines share one ingredient source. Learn more about our one-stop mushroom manufacturing.
- Flexible orders:OEM and ODM, minimum orders set per product, lower quantities on ready-made formulas, and packaging design.
- Documents:a COA for the mushroom raw material and a full ingredient list for every product.
More than 1,000 brands in over 40 countries and regions work with us, and factory audits and visits are welcome.
Start With One Product
You don’t need a full range on day one. Many brands start with one body care product that uses the same mushroom as their best-known supplement, then add hair care or oral care once they see how shoppers respond.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can mushroom extracts be used in skincare and personal care?
Yes. Reishi and tremella extracts are the most common choices, and lion’s mane, cordyceps, chaga and reishi spore oil can also be used. We develop mushroom formulas for body wash, body lotion, hand cream, soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and mouthwash.
What is tremella used for in personal care?
Tremella, also called snow fungus or yin er, is used as a moisturizing-type ingredient in body lotions and hand creams. Keep the label wording cosmetic and check the claims rules in each market where you sell.
Is mushroom toothpaste a cosmetic or a drug?
It depends on the formula and the claims. In the United States, fluoride toothpaste and toothpaste that claims to fight cavities are OTC drugs. Our mushroom toothpaste is developed as a fluoride-free cosmetic toothpaste with cosmetic wording only.
What is the minimum order for private label mushroom personal care?
It depends on the product, the formula and the packaging. Ready-made formulas can be ordered in lower quantities than fully custom ones, which makes it easier to test one product before building a range.
