If you want to start a mushroom supplement brand, the fastest route is usually ODM: you adapt one of the factory’s proven formulas, order a first run, and learn from real customers. Brands that already have a tested formula can go straight to OEM. Many brands do both in turn, starting with ODM and moving to a formula of their own once they know what sells.
This guide is for sellers planning a first launch on Amazon or on their own website. It covers how to pick your starting model, what to prepare before you contact a manufacturer, and how the sales channel shapes your first order.
The Short Answer: Start With ODM, Grow Into OEM
Which model should a new mushroom brand start with? For most first-time sellers, ODM. The factory supplies a proven formula and the R&D work, so you can sample quickly, keep early costs down and test demand before you invest in a formula of your own. OEM is the better start when you already have a finished formula with exact amounts per serving.
The two models differ mainly in who brings the formula:
- OEM (original equipment manufacturing):you supply the formula and specifications, and the factory produces to your plan.
- ODM (original design manufacturing):the factory starts from its own formula library and adjusts the formula, specifications and format to your target market.

Five Questions to Find Your Starting Model
Answer these honestly before you request a quote. If most of your answers are “no”, start with ODM.
- Do you have a finished formula? That means every ingredient and its amount per serving, not just a list of mushrooms.
- Do you know your extract specifications? For example, whether you want fruiting body extract, and which marker (polysaccharides or beta-glucan) should appear on the COA, at what level.
- Is there someone on your team who handles R&D or regulatory questions?Without that person, the factory’s R&D team will be doing much of this work anyway.
- Do you need samples within a week?Standard samples take 5–7 days; a custom formula takes longer to sample.
- Is the formula itself your selling point? If your edge is your brand, content or channel rather than a unique blend, a proven formula lets you focus on what you do best.
Why Mushroom Products Make the First Launch Harder
Medicinal mushrooms bring three challenges that general supplement guides rarely mention. Each one is a reason new sellers lean on a manufacturer’s experience.
- Batch-to-batch consistency.Active compounds in mushroom extracts can vary between batches. Ask for a COA for every batch, not a single sample report.
- Blend compatibility.Combining several mushroom extracts in one product, such as lion’s mane with cordyceps, reishi (ling zhi) and chaga, takes formulation work to keep the product stable and easy to use. Test the sample in the format you will actually sell.
- Label rules in each market. What you may say on a label differs between the US, Canada and the EU. A formula that works in one market may need different wording, or even different ingredients, in another. Our mushroom supplement compliance guide covers the main differences.
What to Prepare Before You Contact a Manufacturer
A clear brief gets you an accurate quote and a faster first sample. What you need depends on your starting model.
If You Are Starting With OEM
- The complete formula, with each ingredient and its amount per serving
- Extract specifications: raw material (for example, fruiting body), extraction method if you have a preference, and the marker and level to test
- Format and serving size: capsules, tablets, powder, gummies, tinctures or drink mixes
- Target markets, so the factory can check certifications and documents
- Packaging: bottle, pouch, stick pack or box, and your label files if they are ready
- Quantity per SKU for the first order
With OEM at Herbal Treasure, you do not need to source raw materials yourself. We source the ingredients for your formula.
If You Are Starting With ODM
- Your target market and the customer you have in mind
- The format you want, or two you are deciding between
- The role the product plays in your range, for example a single-mushroom product or a multi-mushroom blend
- Your target retail price, which guides ingredient and packaging choices
- Certifications your market expects, such as USDA Organic, EU Organic, Halal or Kosher
- Packaging ideas, or a request for packaging design
- Quantity per SKU for the first order
Amazon vs Your Own Website: How the Channel Shapes Your Launch
The same product can be launched in very different ways depending on where you sell it. The rules below are general; your own market and category may add more.
Selling on Amazon
In Amazon’s US store, dietary supplements must be verified by an approved third-party testing, inspection and certification (TIC) organization before they can be sold. According to testing bodies that run this verification, such as SGS, the review typically covers identity and potency, contaminants such as heavy metals and microbials, undeclared ingredients, label accuracy, and manufacture in a cGMP-compliant facility.
For a new brand, this means the spec sheet, the label and the finished product must all match from the first order. Brief your manufacturer on the exact label claims and amounts before production, not after. Amazon updates these rules from time to time, so confirm the current requirements in Seller Central before you launch. To choose which products to list, see mushroom supplements to sell on Amazon.
Selling on Your Own Website
On your own store, no marketplace reviews your listing, but the label and claims rules of each country you ship to still apply. You also control the whole customer experience, which gives you more room to build a range around one story: for example, a lion’s mane capsule, a lion’s mane coffee and a gummy under one brand.
Packaging matters more here, because it is often the first physical contact a customer has with your brand. If you plan to sell in several regions, check whether one label can serve them all or whether you need regional versions.
A Practical Roadmap: From First Sample to Your Own Formula

Most brands we work with move through four stages. The lead times below are Herbal Treasure’s typical times.
- Choose and sample.Pick a ready formula or brief a custom one. Standard samples take 5–7 days; custom ODM samples take 7–14 days.
- Make your first run.Our minimum order is 500 units per SKU, for both OEM and ODM. Standard production takes 15–20 days.
- Sell and learn.Watch reviews, repeat purchases and customer questions. They tell you what to change in flavor, format or serving size.
- Refine or build your own formula.Adjust the product, add formats, or develop a formula of your own and produce it under OEM. Deeply customized projects take 4–6 weeks.
International delivery usually takes 7–14 days, with shipment tracking and customs clearance support. For the full schedule, see our mushroom supplement manufacturing timeline.
How Herbal Treasure Supports Both Starting Points
Herbal Treasure has worked with edible and medicinal mushrooms since 2003 and supplies brands in more than 40 countries and regions. We support both models, so you can start where you are and change model as you grow.
For OEM brands, you bring the formula and we handle raw material sourcing, extraction, formulation, testing, production and export documentation.
For ODM brands, our R&D team of more than 100 people builds on a library of more than 5,000 proven formulas. In September 2026 we added 16 gummy and 8 tincture formulas. The team handles raw material selection, multi-mushroom blend development, sampling and production, including common combinations such as lion’s mane (hou tou gu), cordyceps (chong cao), reishi and chaga (bai hua rong).
What sits behind both models:
- Formats and capacity:four capsule lines with up to 3 million capsules a day, 2 million tablets a day, 600,000–800,000 powder sachets a day, more than 3 tonnes of gummies a day, and automatic filling of 30,000–50,000 bottles a day
- Packaging designfor bottles, pouches, stick packs and gift boxes
- Certifications:NSF cGMP, ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, HACCP, and EU, USDA and Canada Organic
- Testing:our in-house lab tests every batch for heavy metals, active content, microbiology and genetic identity; third-party testing is available on request, at the client’s cost
- Factory visits and auditsare welcome
The Bottom Line
Starting a mushroom supplement brand does not require a lab or a formula of your own. Start with a proven formula, make a first run of 500 units per SKU, and let your customers show you what to build next. When you are ready, a formula of your own can follow under OEM.
