Same formula, new paperwork: what a mushroom supplement needs before it crosses the Atlantic.

To sell mushroom supplements in Europe, you can usually keep your formula, your extract specifications and your testing. What changes is everything around them: the claims you make, the label layout and languages, the organic logo, and a check that each ingredient may legally be sold as food in the EU. A product built for Amazon.com is rarely ready for Europe as it stands.

Most of the brands we manufacture for sell in North America, followed by Europe. This guide walks through the changes to plan for when you take a lion’s mane, reishi or cordyceps product from the US to the EU.

What Stays the Same: Formula, Specs and Testing

The good news is that the core of a well-made mushroom supplement travels well. Shoppers on both sides of the Atlantic browse the same broad needs (focus, energy, immune support and functional drinks), and serious buyers in both markets judge a product by its numbers, not by the word “extract” on the front.

  • The extract specification.Polysaccharides (for example 20–50%), triterpenes (4–10%) for reishi, beta-glucan for lion’s mane or turkey tail, and cordycepin and adenosine for cordyceps militaris. Set the marker and its level once and use it for both markets.
  • The certificate of analysis (COA).Active content, heavy metals and microbiology are checked in both markets. A batch that passes your US specification will pass the same specification for Europe.
  • The format.Capsules, powders, gummies and tinctures are all sold in both regions.
  • Manufacturing standards.cGMP production is part of Amazon’s verification in the US, and food safety certifications such as FSSC 22000 and ISO 22000 are recognized by buyers in both regions.

Five Things That Change When You Sell Mushroom Supplements in Europe

What changes between a US and an EU mushroom supplement? Five things: the health claims you may use, the label format and its mandatory statements, the label languages, the ingredient’s Novel Food status, and the organic certificate behind any organic logo. The formula, extract specification and COA can usually stay the same.

Sell mushroom supplements in Europe: a side-by-side comparison of what stays the same and what changes between a US and an EU mushroom supplement label

One product, two markets: the formula stays, the label and paperwork change.

1. Health Claims: From Structure/Function to Authorized Claims Only

This is the biggest change, and it affects your listing copy as much as your label.

  • In the US, supplements may carry structure/function statements describing how an ingredient supports normal body function. Each one must be followed by the FDA disclaimer that the statement has not been evaluated by the FDA and that the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
  • In the EU, only health claims authorized under Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 may be used. Around 2,000 claims for botanical ingredients have been “on hold” since 2012, awaiting assessment, and EU member states do not all treat them in the same way.

In practice, copy that is acceptable on Amazon.com often has to be rewritten for Europe. One common approach is to replace benefit statements with factual product information: the mushroom, the part used (fruiting body), the extraction method, and the marker and its level per serving. Have every claim reviewed for each country you sell in.

2. The Label Format: Supplement Facts vs the EU Food Supplement Label

A US label is built around the Supplement Facts panel. The EU has no single panel format, but the Food Supplements Directive (2002/46/EC) requires the label to:

  • use the name “food supplement”
  • name the categories of nutrients or substances that characterize the product
  • give the recommended daily portion
  • warn not to exceed the recommended daily dose
  • state that food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet
  • state that the product should be kept out of the reach of young children

The same directive bans any claim that a food supplement prevents, treats or cures a human disease. Some EU countries also ask for the label to be notified to the national authority before sale.

3. Languages and a Responsible Company in the EU

Under the EU Food Information Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, mandatory label information must appear in a language easily understood by consumers in each country where the product is sold. A pack sold in Germany, France and Italy may therefore need three languages, or separate label versions.

The label must also name the food business operator responsible for the product. If that business is outside the EU, the importer into the EU takes that role. Plan this before you design packaging, because it decides whose name and address go on the pack.

Canada has a similar rule of its own: natural health product labels must be in English and French, and each product needs its own product licence and Natural Product Number (NPN).

4. Ingredient Status: Check the Novel Food Catalogue

In the EU, a food that was not consumed to a significant degree before 15 May 1997 is a “novel food” and needs authorization before it can be sold (Regulation (EU) 2015/2283). The European Commission’s Novel Food Catalogue shows the status of many ingredients, and an entry can differ by species and by use, for example food supplements only.

Check each mushroom, and the form you plan to use, before you commit to a European launch. Our mushroom supplement compliance guide explains how this fits with the US and Canadian rules.

5. Organic Logos and Recipe Details

An organic claim needs a certificate for the market where it appears. The USDA Organic seal and the EU organic logo are separate schemes, so a product sold with both needs both certificates, covering the actual ingredients and production site. For wild-harvested mushrooms such as turkey tail, the organic file also includes a wild-collection certificate.

Recipe details matter too. Sweeteners, colors and other additives in gummies and drink powders must be on the EU’s list of permitted food additives, so a US gummy or drink recipe may need adjusting before it can be sold in Europe. Our gummies use pectin rather than gelatin, which suits vegan positioning in both markets. For tinctures, the choice between an alcohol and a glycerin base is worth discussing at the formula stage. See our mushroom gummies and tinctures guide.

North America vs Europe at a Glance

United States European Union
Claims Structure/function statements with FDA disclaimer Authorized health claims only
Label Supplement Facts panel “Food supplement” plus mandatory statements
Language English Language of each country of sale
Ingredient check New dietary ingredient rules Novel Food status
Organic USDA Organic certificate EU organic certificate
Marketplace Third-party testing verification on Amazon.com Check each Amazon store’s category rules

Amazon’s US store requires dietary supplements to be verified by an approved third-party testing, inspection and certification organization. Rules for Amazon’s European stores are set per marketplace, so confirm the current requirements in Seller Central for each country before you list.

The UK has its own rules since leaving the EU, so treat it as a separate market when you plan labels and claims.

A Practical Sequence for a Two-Market Launch

  1. Lock one specification.Fix the mushroom, the part used, the marker, its level and the test method.
  2. Check every ingredient for the EU.Look up Novel Food status for each mushroom and form.
  3. Write two sets of copy.Keep US structure/function wording for the US, and factual or authorized wording for Europe.
  4. Design the label for both.Leave room for EU languages and the EU responsible company’s details.
  5. Confirm certificates.Match each organic logo to a valid certificate in the factory’s name.
  6. Test samples against the spec.Approve the COA once, then check every batch against it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell my US mushroom supplement in Europe without changes?

Rarely. The formula and specification can usually stay the same, but the label, claims and languages normally need to change, and each ingredient’s Novel Food status must be checked. Organic logos also need the matching EU certificate.

What health claims can mushroom supplements make in the EU?

Only health claims authorized under Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006. Claims for botanical ingredients have been on hold since 2012, and member states apply different approaches, so have every claim reviewed for each country and lean on factual product information.

Does an EU supplement label need to be in every language?

Mandatory information must be in a language easily understood by consumers in each country where the product is sold. Brands selling in several EU countries use multilingual labels or separate versions per country.

Can one factory supply the same product for the US and the EU?

Yes, if it holds certificates for both markets. Herbal Treasure holds USDA Organic and EU Organic certification and works to one specification and COA, with label versions prepared for each market.
